Quietness is a need we have as followers of Christ and lovers of God. As Jesus went away from the sounds (both urgent and otherwise) of the world, so should we. There are things the spirit of a man can only apprehend through the pushing away of sound. The soul should be made subject to our spirit, and this is a significant way to engage and develop this protocol: sitting in quietness. This readies us for maturity of life in the Spirit... further able to enjoy, to listen, to abide through the other circumstances in our lives.

Jesus, in preparing His disciples for His going to the Father, said: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27). I need this, and so do you. He gives this and thus it can be received. Not passively, not as happenstance - because God is relentlessly intentional.

"In returning and rest you shall be saved;
In quietness and confidence shall be your strength." - Isa. 30:15b
